One matter, one task.
Clean Up sweeps your board for duplicates: a task for something you already finished, a matter that came back, the same thing filed twice. It shows you each one, merges what you agree to, and keeps a snapshot so you can always go back. You’ll find it on the Tasks screen, in the ⋯ menu.
Two emails, one matter: Clean Up makes it one task
Even good triage slips now and then. Clean Up sweeps your board for the four kinds of duplicate that matching can miss, and merges them, so nothing is counted twice.
Active duplicates of completed work
A new task for something you have already finished, usually because the sender wrote again.
Finished matters back on the board
A matter you closed that a later email brought back as if it were new.
Active duplicates of On-Hold tasks
A second copy of something you deliberately parked.
Duplicate completed entries
The same finished task recorded twice in your history.
Tasks → ⋯ → Clean Up
Four steps, on iPhone, iPad or Mac. Nothing is removed until you confirm.
Open it
On the Tasks screen, tap the ⋯ menu and choose Clean Up. It scans your board straight away.
Let it check
Each possible duplicate is shown as a group. Claude or Apple Intelligence checks each group and pre-selects the ones it confirms; without either, nothing is pre-selected and you decide.
Keep what you want
Turn Skip on for any group you want to keep. Skipped groups are remembered, so the next sweep does not ask again, until you switch Skip off or the tasks leave the board.
Confirm
Tap Clear to remove the duplicates you left selected. A full snapshot of your board is saved first.
Good to know before you clear
Clean Up is quick, but it is your board, so here is what each part of the screen does.
When to run it
Whenever the board looks like it is repeating itself: two cards for the same invoice, a finished job back on the list, or after a busy week. There is no harm in running it on a clean board. It simply says no duplicates were found.
Reading a group
Each group lists its tasks marked KEEP or REMOVE: the one that stays, and the copies that would go. A note says who checked it. Groups that were confirmed are selected for clearing; one that looks distinct is left for you to decide.
From a single task
Spotted one while reading your board? Press and hold the task, choose Something’s wrong…, then Duplicate. Clean Up opens on that matter, so you can clear it there and then.
What Clear does
Open duplicates are removed from your board on every device. Duplicate completed entries are collapsed into one, so your history keeps a single record of the work.
Re-scan
Re-scan fetches your latest board first, then looks again. Use it after a routine run, or if you have just cleaned on another device.
Changed your mind about a Skip?
Groups you chose to keep are listed under Skipped earlier. Switch Skip off on one to have it offered again, or use Forget all to start fresh.
Every clean can be rolled back
Clean Up is careful by default, and the same screen holds the way back.
Restore a previous board
A full snapshot is saved automatically before every clean and every reset. If too much went, open Clean Up and tap Restore on the snapshot you want. Your current board is backed up before it is replaced, so a restore can be undone too.
Reset board
For a board that has got into a tangle: clears every active and on-hold task, keeps your completed history, and lets the next routine run rebuild a fresh, de-duplicated board.
Suggested from your feedback
If you have reported the same sender more than once, Clean Up offers to mute it. Muting stops that sender’s mail reaching triage, so nothing from it reaches your board again. Tap No to leave it.
